One of the most important problems now facing the Canadian civil engineer is the deterioration of the national infrastructure, which can at best be qualified as preoccupying. Today’s engineer must show ingenuity to evaluate the state of existing structures, preserve them from demolition, and extend their service life. New bridges and structures must be built with a planned longevity that exceeds that of those currently in service. The paper reviews Canadian projects that have been completed using fiber reinforced polymers. These include reinforcement projects, as well as construction of new structures. All selected projects involved the Canadian Network Centres of Excellence on Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures (ISIS Canada).
